Breastfeeding & the Newborn

Breast is Best on all Occasions

The benefits of breastfeeding are infinite and go far beyond the list we shall include. All efforts should be made to support breast feeding and continue breastfeeding beyond the first, even the second year. For some women this may sound alarming, even doctors will recommend exclusive breast feeding only up to six months. Nevertheless there is an abundance of research that now proves what women have always known intuitively to be true.

Benefits for the baby begin with the first taste of golden colostrum soon after their birth. Packed with antibodies and micro nutrients, this liquid gold serves as the babies first defense in the new world. It quickly enters into the digestive system and begins to coat the lining of the intestines in preparation for the milk. As a natural laxative it helps the baby release months of intestinal build up in the form of meconium. The absolute absorbability of it allows the nutrients to enter the blood and circulate the entire system. The mother's milk that comes in only a few days later continues this process and the process of coating the intestines. This coating is the continuation of natural development of the digestive system and makes the new born less susceptible to future food allergies. The quality of natural mother's milk also soothes the nervous system and completes the development and seal of the blood brain barrier. This work can not be duplicated by formulas.

Other benefits for baby: Higher intelligence, better eye sight, less ear infections, more devoloped mouth and dentition, improved motor coordination, less respiratory issues, better digestion, less colic, higher absorption of nutrients, stronger immune system and less tendency towards future chronic illness such as asthma, alergies, diabetes and cancer. Breastfeeding also strengthens self esteem and the mutual healthy bonding between mother and child.

Benefits for Mom: From the very beginning it stimulates uterine involution and the production of oxitocin hormones that bring a sense of overall wellbeing and enamor with her new baby, enriching their intuitive connection. Breastfeeding also helps mom regain her pre-pregnant weight and reduces the probability of future uterine and breast cancer. On an economical, ecological and practical level, mother's milk is free, it does not contaminate the environmnet with excessive plastic and is always ready and available.

“The benefits to the mother of immediate breastfeeding are innumerable, not the least of which after the weariness of labor and birth is the emotional gratification, the feeling of strength, the composure, and the sense of fulfillment that comes with the handling and suckling of the baby.” ~ Ashley Montague

“No one could give her such soothing and sensible consolation as this little three-month-old creature when he lay at her breast and she felt the movement of his lips and the snuffling of his tiny nose.” ~ Tolstoy - War and Peace

“…A baby nursing at a mother’s breast… is an undeniable affirmation of our rootedness in nature.” ~ David Suzuki - Toronto Star

“A pair of substantial mammary glands has the advantage over two hemispheres of the most learned professor’s brain, in the art of compounding a nutritious fluid for children.” ~ Oliver Wendall Holmes
